My book is called Impulse by Ellen Hopkins.
ReplyDeleteThe book is based around three teenagers Connor, Tony, and Vanessa. They all are very different yet they all have one thing in common, which is to kill/hurt themselves. Once they are all found trying to committ suicide they are taken to a medical hospital for help. The kids have to pass treatments and their counseling sessions so they would move up. All the kids had very different stories about home life and why they thought about suicide.
My favorite character is Connor. He is compelling to me because at first he seems like the jock type. It describes him as big, muscular, wears nice clothing, and looks as though he doesnt has a perfect life. I like him because it shows how looks are so deceiving, especially when he tells his story of his home life. He jumped out to me in the beginning i think mostly because of the way his story starts out. The author describes him so well in the beginning I feel as though he may be a real person.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It has everything for everyone and keeps you interested the entire time. The book has suspense, romance, mystery, and so many varied emotions. The author really draws you in at the right times and makes you read more. She stops at the places where you just have to figure out next, so your never bored. I also love that the book is written in poem form, and uses different types of stanzas for different people.

ReplyDeleteThis summer I read "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. The book is centered around three main characters: Scout, Jem and Atticus. Scout and Jem are the children of Atticus who is a lawyer. In the begining of the story, the children are always wondering about their neighbor "Boo Radley" because nobody has seen him come out of his house in years and the children are convinced that they can make him come out while Atticus is at work.
Midway through the story, Scout and Jem find out that Atticus is representing a black man named Tom Robinson in court. Because of this Scout and Jem have to live with all the towns racial disgrace against them. During the book's last summer, Atticus goes to trial with Tom and sadly loses the case with Tom being taken to prison. Shortly after being taken to prison, Tom tries to escape but gets killed in the attempt. Later on in the book, the father of the plaintiff, Bob Ewell, tries to kill Atticus' children after a Halloween pageant because of his hatred of Atticus. Miraculously the children are saved by "Boo Radley". Scout couldn't believe that she had finally gotten "Boo Radley" out of his house and takes Boo home. This story is about getting through tough times with undertones of race and social struggle.
My favorite character is Scout Finch. She is compelling to me because she is a very spunky, fun-loving girl. The book characterizes her as a tomboy who has trouble acting like a lady. I like her because although she goes through tough times in the book she always finds a way to make things seem very fun and exciting. She learns many great lessons that make her become very lady-like by the end of the book.
I would recommend this book to many people. It really keeps the reader interested in each chapter and has a great climax. The book has suspense, adventure, and mystery. The author makes the characters very lifelike and makes you feel like you were there. I also really enjoy this book because there are a lot of things that are unexpected.
The book that I chose to read over the summer was titled The Chosen One, written by Carol Lynch Williams.
ReplyDeleteKyra is a 13 year old girl who lives in an isolated community. Kyra's community does not believe in reading books and follows a group of people who are called the Prophets.Kyra learns that she has been chosen by someone in the community to marry... her 60 year old uncle. Meanwhile Kyra has secretly fallen in love with another boy in the community. She is forced to make life changing descisions between her family and her own good.
My favorite character in the book is the main character, Kyra. Kyra has 20 brothers and sisters, and counting. She lives with her father and his 3 wives. I find her character compelling because she has grown up with a life where rules are becoming harsher on her community. Kyra sneeks around at night and day time, to follow her own heart and what she really, truely believes. That's really what is interesting to me, the fact that, even though she knows she has a risk of getting caught and severly punished for her actions, she does things for her own hearts desire. I also love that she can sneek around in such a watched community and get away with it, but really that she is so brave to even dare.
I would reccomend this book to anyone who is ready for a thrill. This story will make you sit on your hands in angst to see what happens next, chill your mind at thought of what goes on inside this community, and make you take think twice about the life we live. The Chosen One, keepsthe reader hooked the entire time throwing stories of young love, mystery and adventure all into one.
